WHY ARE WE NEEDED?

 

A child in Mississippi:

- is born into poverty every 46 minutes

- is abused or neglected every hour

- dies before her first birthday every 19 hours

- is killed by gunfire every 5 days


Percent of Mississippi fourth graders reading below proficiency: 82%

Percent of Mississippi 16- to 19-year-olds who are not enrolled in school and are not high school graduates: 12.4%

Percent of total births in Hinds County to teens: 18%

Percent of total births in Hinds County to unmarried women: 57%

Percent of total births in Hinds County to mothers with less than 12 years of education: 22%

Percent students in Hinds County eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch as an indicator of child poverty in 2001: 72%

Percent of students at our neighborhood schools eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch as an indicator of child poverty in 2003:
- Galloway:
94.6%,
- Rowan: 98.3%
- Lanier: 73.1%

Hinds County high school graduation rate in 2001: 66%
